AKITA® Plate allows high throughput drug screening with relevant humanized in-vitro models
See how it worksAKITA® Plate is designed to provide microphysiological culture conditions to generate and maintain biological barriers, namely the blood-brain barrier, the airway barrier, gut epithelial barrier, and vascular endothelial barrier. Similar to in-vivo conditions, endothelial cells are maintained under constant flow, and epithelial cells are maintained statically, either in a submerged or air-liquid interface.
AKITA® Plate comes in two sizes, 96- and 384- wellplate footprints. The 96-format allows for higher volume (150 uL) experiments with 24 replicates per plate, while the 384-format allows for higher throughput, 96 experiments, with a reduced volume (30 uL).
AKITA Plates are compatible with virtually every imaging modality. We have used digital holography, ultrasound imaging, electron microscopy, confocal imaging, and even MRI!
With a standard SBS footprint, AKITA Plates are the most user-friendly organ-on-chips platform ever designed.
We have shown with high replicate number that AKITA Plate used with blood vessel endothelial cells together with astrocytes mimics the function of the BBB very close to the function in vivo
With the AKITA platform we have replicated the human lung tissue model with Air-Liquid-Interphase. The model based on A549 cells exhibits the airway cilia structures on the cell surface as shown in the picture taken from the AKITA Plate-96 using Scanning Electron Microscope.
Generate 50-500 micron diameter lumenized vessels in a consistent manner on the AKITA Lumen platform. Each 96-wellpate format generates 24 lumen networks. Investigate rolling adhesion of cancer cells on vascular lumens, or generate bone marrow niche in chondrocyte cultures. AKITA Lumen enables constant bidirectional perfusion (or unidirectional with add-on adapter) for all vessels, allowing layer-by-layer culturing of multilayered lumen structures.
Using the Caco2 cell line together with the blood vessel endothelial cells we replicated the human gut tissue on the AKITA Plate. This allows for easy screening of the drug permeability from oral dosing.
